It is our honor to share with you, our PARTNERS,
the PCEEM Davao experiences in watershed management, as they are
featured in this site.
The People Collaborating for Environmental and Economic Management
in Davao (PCEEM-Davao) Foundation, as an offshoot of a collaboration
between the governments of the Philippines and Canada, has gone
a long way to have reached this point of being able to pride itself
for having made significant contribution to the metropolis of Davao
City by acting as one of the sentinels of the Talomo-Lipadas Watershed.
The Watershed, as a major source of water, is the lifeblood of over
1 million Davaoeños who depend on water for drinking and
for economic activities. Next to air, water is a resource that man
cannot live without. Sadly though, for the past decades, only a
few have realized the critical role that our watershed plays in
our survival. Many cling on the old hype that nature abounds with
water and it will never cease to flow to satiate mans needs.
Hence, we destroy the watershed by incessantly cutting trees upstream,
dumping garbage and wastes in rivers, lakes and seas; using destructive
and non-ecologically friendly agricultural practices and excessively
extracting groundwater.
It was only recently that we have learned our lessons when we started
experiencing the wrath of nature. Flooding, erosion, lowering of
groundwater, etc. are just few of these effects that affect our
lives.
Taking a proactive stance, PCEEM Davao and its partners embarked
on initiatives to help address the issues confronting the Talomo-Lipadas
Watershed. In doing so, partnerships with multi-stakeholders were
established, a mechanism, which we have proven to be an effective
strategy to achieve sustainability in all efforts to protect, conserve,
rehabilitate and manage the watershed.
Our last six years of providing development interventions in the
TLW was an uphill climb but very rich with experiences that highlighted
PCEEMs significant contributions. The same experiences
have made us more zealous in our commitment to bring to fruition
our vision of a sustainable and ecologically-balanced Talomo-Lipadas
Watershed.
