BASE ISSUE:

In an area with high population growth and associated activities, the lack of proper waste management threatens the health of the people and increases the economic costs to everyone.

Sub Issues:

 ISSUES
Solid Waste Dumping Site
  1. Lack of sanitary toilets of some households

    * Contributes to possible contamination of rivers and groundwater
    * Leads to diseases such as diarrhea, etc.

  2. Lack of waste water treatment facilities in some large settlement areas

    Commercial and institutional establishments are possible source of aquifer contamination

  3. Dumping of solid wastes in rivers and coastal waters

    Add to the accumulation of wastes in the water bodies which could lead to possible biological death of these bodies.

  4. Improper disposal of agro-industrial wastes

    * Fish kill
    * Possible chemical contamination of aquifer

  5. Inadequate facilities for wastes management

    * Pollution of water bodies
    * Potential source of ground water contamination

  6. Inadequate information and knowledge on waste management

    Add to the build-up of waste

  7. Inadequate facilities for wastes management

    * More people, more resources needed to sustain (i.e., wood for fuel, housing, more land, etc.)
