ECONOMIC & LIVEHOOD
PROJECTS
The following projects were
implemented with barangay LGUs, city and line government agencies,
community organizations, private sector and civic organizations,
among others.
a. Establishment
of Shallow Water Fish Shelter (Payao). A board-led intervention
covering 4 barangays along Talomo Bay, Matina Aplaya, Talomo, Bago
Aplaya and Dumoy. It had three major components: capability building
/ IEC; installation of payao, and smoked fish processing. It is
being managed by the Davao Gulf Federation of Fisherfolks (DGFF).
b. Integrated
Backyard Swine Production. In coordination with the
tribal council and government agencies, this project was initiated
in four barangays: Tagluno, Daliaon Plantation, Los Amigos and Baguio
Proper. Forty-four (44) farmers participated with a stock per farmer.
The technology being used is natural farming combined with best
conventional breeding practices.
c. Food
Security and Agro-forestry. To address critical food security
needs in the upland communities, six (6) barangays were organized
to set up a communal Stock Production Area (SPA). These are in Carmen,
Baguio District; Tamayong, Calinan District; and Tungkalan/Daliaon,
Sirib and Bayabas, all in Toril District. SPA is designed to produce
quality seedlings for dispersal to beneficiary households who have
been trained in plant propagation, land preparation, plant care
and maintenance. Organic vegetable farming, bamboo propagation,
and poultry production were also components of the project.
d. Bamboo
Propagation along Talomo River Bank. This project came about
because of the need to address the siltation in the Talomo river
and flooding of areas along the river. Moreover, the economic benefits
to be derived by the communities and the LGU from bamboo propagation
is another important consideration. This activity is under an adopt-a-riverbank
scheme; and a study of collaboration between the LGU, youth groups,
students, civic organizations, police, private sector, and line
and city government agencies.
e. Davao
City Community-based Solid Waste Management Project. The
project commenced in January 2001. PCEEM supported the social preparation
component of the project in partnership with the Davao City Chamber
of Commerce and Industry, Inc. which is a project stakeholder representing
the business sector. The project aims to develop a waste exchange
program that is economically and financially viable.
f. Calinan
Solid Waste Management. This, in a way, is a replication
of the solid waste management project in Toril except that it adheres
closely to the provisions of R.A. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000. The proponent is the Barangay Calinan Poblacion
LGU with management anchored to the Calinan Innovative Solid Waste
Management Association (CISWMA). The high economic potentials, aside
from the sanitation benefits, have been an incentive to all involved.
g. Ram
Pump Hydraulic Water System. A Ram Pump had been installed
in Barangays Sirib and Bayabas. In Sirib, the ram pump carries water
from 40 meters below to ground level providing 1000-1,200 liters
per day to 346 households. In Bayabas, the water is for agricultural
use and farmers further down had hoses connected to the reservoir
for their supply.
h. Small
Farmers Environmental and Economic Agro-Forestry Project.
Phase I of this project was on identification of pilot areas
and tree species. Phase II focused on the re-introduction
of high value forest trees on vacant areas along with fruit trees
and other agricultural crops in A & D lands. It had profiled
5 farm clusters with 30 farm owner/operators covering 40 ha in 2
sitios of Tungkalan of which 84% of the prioritized farm areas have
been planted.
i. Promoting
Sustainable Agriculture in Hilly Lands. The project used
the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Gender Analysis tools
which baseline data on the socio-economic and agro-ecosystem situation
of the community provided the input for this project. It embarked
extensively on SA trainings, participatory technology development,
and technology transfer.
