resources in the area. On the other hand, the introduction of smoked fish technology as a livelihood component provides additional income to women-beneficiaries of the project. Four contiguous coastal barangays namely Brgys. Talomo, Matina Aplaya, Bago Aplaya and Dumoy comprise the project area. The DGFF is the main partner of the project with more than 15 associations federated under its name.

To date, the following activities have already been conducted: 1) Project Orientation/Project Management Training; 2) Paralegal training for the deputization of community-based fish wardens; 3) Partnership building with the project partners namely: Davao Gulf Federation of Fisherfolks, City Agriculturist Office, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, TESDA, Club Rotary of Pag-asa Davao and the LGUs at the barangay level of the four (4) barangays covered by the project; 4) Installation of twenty (20) units payao (with one mother payao) along the Talomo Bay; 5) Provision of a motorized pump boat for monitoring and surveillance in the project area; 6) Formulation of operational mechanics and policies for proper project implementation and management.

Significance of the Project

The project hopes to establish a livelihood program for the coastal communities along the Talomo Bay area and broaden the community awareness pertaining to environmental conservation and protection.

The establishment of a payao is considered an aggregating device for fish sanctuary and a place for shielding various marine species. It also serves as a natural fish habitat and prevents migration in times of spawning and breeding period. Through the installation of payao in the project area, fish catch will increase by three times.

On the other hand, the introduction of smoked fish technology as a livelihood component of the project shall provide additional income to the women-beneficiaries and spouses. Smoking the fish increases its market value, prolongs its shelf life and improves its flavor.
