The project used the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and
Gender Analysis tools which baseline data on the socio-economic
and agro- ecosystem situation of the community provided the
input for this project. It embarked extensively on Sustainable
Agriculture trainings, participatory technology development,
and technology transfer. The farmers have adopted technologies
like mulching, contour farming, natural attractant of flying
insects, fermented fruit juice concoction and, natural farming
technology of hog raising, among others. A total of 2,259
seedlings of fruit trees and 1,000 forest trees have been
dispersed to 35 beneficiaries.
Significance of the Project:
Talomo-Lipadas watershed is the major source
of Davao Citys potable water. Most part of the watersheds
is agricultural lands. The rapid spread of urbanization is
affecting its landscape. There is massive land conversion
into plantations in the upper portion of the area. The improper
cultivation of the hilly lands and deforestation are the major
causes of soil erosion which results to sedimentation of rivers
and costal waters. In addition, the improper use of fertilizers
and pesticides contaminate surface and groundwater as well
as the air. Moreover, encroachment of the forest area is inevitable
because of poverty.
The introduction of sustainable farming technologies
in the hilly lands will help lessen the above problems. The
project will educate and mobilize the people to make alternative
ways to protect and preserve the environment for sustainability.
